mp4?
Movie not playing?
Install one of the following players: Quicktime or VLC.
Let me know if there are other players that support mp4.
Why mp4?
At this moment there are two main choices when you want to encode video for the web: Windows Media version 9 (WMV9) and MPEG 4 (mp4).
I have chosen mp4 even though Windows users will have to go through the inconvenience of installing another movie player. There are a few reasons for this:
- MPEG 4 is an established standard from the ISO/MPEG group. WMV is not a standard (yet).
- Windows Media files are obviously well supported under Microsoft Windows, but not so good on other platforms. Windows Media player on Mac OS X is very slow and Linux couldn’t play WMV files until DVD Jon ported the VC1 reference codec to Linux.
- Until recently, there was no way to encode WMV on a Macintosh.
Edit 2007: I really should be encoding everything to flash by now…
